Four Projects in Four Years
The four projects that comprise the ForGreer initiative are intended to address the immediate and growing needs of the Greer community. Each of the projects fills a gap in services identified by city council, city planners, or third-party studies.
Public safety is always a priority for city leaders, and the new fire station will address increased growth in the northern part of the city. The public safety training center will allow our first responders to train consistently in Greer, rather than rely on surrounding municipalities and their facilities. In the fall of 2024, crews will demolish the fire facilities on Hood Rd. and build the new training center on that property.
Recreation has been identified as a top need in Greer for several years. Historically, the city has only owned one gym for indoor recreational use at Victor Park. For decades, families have packed into the gym at Victor Park for indoor sports activities, but the aging building is no longer viable to meet the needs of our growing population. The city has sold the Victor Park property and bought the land for a larger, more modern facility.
The construction of a sports and events center will allow the city to expand existing programs, add new programs, and offer a quality facility for people in Greer. As a secondary benefit, the new state-of-the-art space will create an opportunity to attract regional and national events which would inject tourism dollars into the city's economy.
Finally, a new parking garage in our central business district will address current parking stressors and create more accessibility for those visiting Greer Station. Located on Depot Street, the city’s second parking garage will also be a proactive move to propel further investment in the area.

Project Highlight: Sports & Events Center
Greer city leaders announced the future home of the sports & events center on August 15, but city staff and paid consultants did a lot of legwork before purchasing the land on S. Highway 14 between Gibb Shoals and S. Buncombe Rd.
The city hired The Sports Facilities Advisory to take a deep dive into Greer’s current recreational needs and determine whether the region could support a new facility designed to host indoor tournaments for teams from across the country. SFA looked at a lot of factors before making a recommendation on the type and scale of facilities the City of Greer should build. They considered sports participation in Greer and the broader region, demographics and income data, existing sports tourism facilities, and more.
SFA produced a detailed Feasibility Report and Five-Year Operating Pro Forma for the City of Greer. Those documents outline recommendations for the size, scope, and amenities for a new sports & events center, a breakdown of the construction and operations costs, and the potential economic impact on the City of Greer.
Sports and Events Center Advisory Committee Meetings
The City of Greer has established an advisory committee to help in the decision making process for the upcoming sports and events center. This dedicated group of community leaders is working together to shape the vision for this exciting new facility, which aims to bring new opportunities for recreation and events to our city. The committee will meet regularly until the projects completion and the meetings are open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend and stay informed about the project’s progress.
The next committee meeting will take place on: January 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Greer City Hall in Hall A. Click the button below to view an agenda of the meeting.
This is a conceptual design and nearby green space was included to show how the sports and events center will complement the current green space in the area. The City of Greer does not currently own the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Ball Field.
Jurisdictional Waters Assessment
Environmental engineering firm S&ME conducted a Jurisdictional Waters Assessment on nearly 27 acres the city purchased for the new sports and events center. S&ME’s survey found a 0.35 acre wetland area and four streams on the back of the property. Construction of the facility shouldn’t affect the identified areas, but the city will work closely with S&ME throughout construction to acquire necessary permits and minimize impact on the wetland and streams.
Depot Street Parking Garage Renderings
Architects at HKM used technology to show how their parking lot design might fit into the Depot Street area of downtown. The images in the slideshow below depict conceptual designs layered on top of aerial photographs taken from multiple angles.
